Abstract The haemopoietic growth factors and cytokines are the soluble regulators of blood cell production and are produced by several cell types in different sites in the body (Lewis and Gorden 2003). They are glycoproteins with little primary amino acid homology (Lyman and Mc Kenna 2003). The responses of haemopoietic cells to cytokines include survival, proliferation, differentiation and stimulation of mature cell function. Once cytokines have bound to their receptors on the cell surface, they activate signal transduction pathways that transmit the signal to the nucleus and ultimately the transcription of regulatory genes. Haemopietic progenitors require multiple cytokines for their optimal growth and development. (slukvin et al., 2006). |
