Abstract

Although we are at the beginning of 21st century, still millions of people are suffering from intestinal parasites. In developing countries parasitic diseases continue to constitute a major public health problem especially among children. Although mortality from such infections is low, it leads to malnourishment and impairment of physical and mental development which causes further morbidity leading to economic and social deprivation. Therefore, it is essential to detect infected children and to treat them promptly in order to enhance their own health for the benefit of the entire community.
Fortunately in recent years an increasing interest in intestinal parasites has been observed, but a great deal of attention was focused on children less than five years. Nevertheless, those aged between 5-15 years are usually neglected in terms of health care services although they may be infected with one or more parasitic diseases and also tend to harbour the heaviest loads.
Tripoli city is the capital of the Libyan Jamahiria. According to last census of 1995 children up to 15 years constituted about 39% of the total population. About 12.5% of the total population are preschool children.
