Abstract Clinically severe obesity is associated with many co-morbidities. Diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease and respiratory failure are among the serious effects of severe obesity. Gall stones, joint and spine problems, infertility and some types of cancer are also caused by morbid obesity. Morbid obesity is defined by a body mass index (BMI) above 40 kg/m2 or above 35 kg / m2 in the presence of obesity co-morbidities. To date surgery offers the only hope for a lasting cure for morbid obesity and its associated co-morbidities. Modern bariatric surgery consists of several gastric operations aiming at decreasing food intake and /or altering absorption. Currently four types of bariatric procedures are commonly used; vertical banded gastroplasty (VBG) and laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) and these are simple gastric restrictive procedures but does not suit sweet eating patients. Roux-en-y – gastric bypass (RYGB) is a complex gastric restrictive procedure that suits sweet-eaters. |
