Abstract Both hypertension and cognitive decline are common in old age. The relationship between hypertension & cognitive functions in elderly is a subject of increasing concern because of the great importance of decline of cognition in later life & the need to identify its potentially modifiable risk factors. - It was found that people exhibit faster age associated cognitive decline as measured by MMSE & that people with high systolic pressure are at a greater risk of cognitive decline (Starr et al., 1997). - The thesis aims to assess the relation ship between hypertension & cognition in elderly & It was carried on 80 elderly subjects selected from geriatric out patient clinic Ain Sham University Hospital as following: 1- 60 yrs. & above, males or females 2- 30 subjects were for control group who were normotensives with no apparent evidence of any condition which may affect cognition . 3- 25 subjects were hypertensives only who were ever diagnosed as hypertensives and\or receiving anti-hypertensive medications or those with SBP ? 180 mm Hg , DBP ? 100 mm Hg at the interview. 4- 25 subjects were hypertensives with other comorbid condition as self-reported & confirmed by examination , any available investigations. The following was done for each subject: 1- History taking. 2- Measurement of blood pressure 3- Clinical examination (general – local (neurologica-cardiac-chest-Abdominal)) 4- Functional assessment by ADL & IADL 5- Assessment of depression by GDS. 6- Neuropsychological assessment using 7 tests of neuropsychological test battery of CERAD (verbal fluency – MMSE – word list task – const. praxis – word list recall – word list recognition – recall of praxis). |
