Abstract

Leukaemia is considered to be a fatal disease of unknown aetiology, which plays a serious role driving in childhood morbidity and mortality.
Leukaemia is the abnormal proliferative disorder of the blood and blood-Forming organs. As those cells reproduce, they spill out of the bone narrow and enter the blood stream and lymph system. Eventually, they ivade vital organs and glands, causing them to enlarge and malfunction occurs.
The current study aimed to, assess the knowledge, practice, and attitude of care-providers who are caring for their leukaemic children, to establish and implement an educational program based on collected data, and literature review, and to evaluate the outcome of the educational program directed towards care-providers of leukaemic children. With provision of modern audiovisual aids such as, cassette and videotapes, also printing instructional booklets in Arabic. Overhead projector and transparencies, handouts, and boards “Fliep charts” were included.
The target sample included 50 care-providers of leukaemic children at home, including children and their mothers, or other members of the family who are attending the Haematology/Oncology Clinics of children’s Hospitals, at Ain Shams University. Other group of equal size consisted of 50 care-providers was selected from the Oncology Institute. The first group was the experimental group and they were offered to the planned educational program, but the second group was the control group and they were not exposed to the educational program.
Pilot study was initiated, and the same study instruments were tested to verify validity of the questionnaire and the observation checklists. Also, to explore the needed content to be included into the program.
Administration design of this study had been taken place, and letters of permission were approved by both of chairman of pediatrics in Ain Shams University and chairman of the Oncology Institute.
