Abstract

The present work aims at finishing of knitted cotton fabric intended for use as lining in athletic garments antibacterial properties, without affecting its natural. ability to absorb moisture. The latter property is one of the key standards in such fabrics. The approach used is to use two antibacterial agents, one of the leaching type and the other of a reactant type, in the easy care finishing formulation of these fabrics. Accordingly, the present work is divided into three parts:- l- A Leaching Type. Antibacterial Agent in the Easy Care Finishing of Knitted Cotton Fabric - A leaching type antibacterial agent (namely Tinosan®CEL) was incorporated in an easy care finishing formulation of knitted cotton fabric. - Finishing was conducted at different conditions including type of softener (Solusoft®WA 90 ET, Leomin~I-ET, Ultratex®7723, Sapamin®-KL NEW and Siligen®TX 2490), cross linker (Arkofix G-ET, Fixapret®CPN and Knittex®FEL) and catalyst (Knittex@Catalyst Mo, NH4CI, Mg C12. 6 H2o and ZnS04) as well as concentrations of ”Knittex®FEL/ZnSO/ and Tinosan®CEL besides curing time and temperature. It was found that optimal additives to Tinosan®CEL that afford. maximum overall antibacterial activities (against Staphylococcus aureliS and Pseudomonas aerllginosa) and hydrophilicity to the fabric finished by the pad-dry-cure method (100% wet pick up; drying at 100°C/5 min; curing at 160°C/5min) were: Knittex®FEL (50g/I)/ZnS04 (5 g/l) and Siligen® TX2490 (20g/l) along with a wetting agent (2 g/l) and acetic acid (1 g/l).
