Abstract

Objective:
The aim of our work was to study the different risk factors for catheter-related infections (CRls), to clarify the controversy regarding the portal of entry of these infections, to compare the diagnostic usefulness of the different techniques for culture of central and peripheral venous catheters, and to show the most common organisms involved in CRls.
Methods: Our work was conducted on 294 venous catheters (189 central Venous catheters’ and 105 peripheral catheters). Each catheter was cuiturcd qualitatively (in broth) and quantitatively (by the roll-plate, sonication, vortexing, or flushing technique). Each cultured catheter had an associated blood culture from a peripheral vein.
Results :Catheter-related infection (colonized catheter, exit-site infection, seeded catheter, or catheter-related bloodstream infection) was diagnosed in 28.2 (10 of the cases, whereas 71.8% of the catheters were non-infected (sterile or contaminated). Sonication method gave the best results. Staph aureus and Enterobacter aerogenes were the commonest encountered orgal11sllls.
Conclusion: Venous catheters should not be used unless clinically indicated.Catheters arc better cultured by the sanitation technique. Qualitative culture methods are unreliable and should not be used alone.
