Abstract

Malignant pleural effusions represent ever standing problems in their management. They are frequent contributors to morbidity in patients with a variety of underlying cancers. The
commonest causes for malignant effusions are cancer lung, breast cancer, lymphomas and pleural malignancies. They can occur also as a complication of lung metastasis from gentiourinary and gastrointestinal .malignancies. Several options are available for treatment of malignant pleural effusions. They include repeated thoracentesis, pleurodesis with a sclerosing agent administered via a chest tube, pleuroperitoneal shunting, Laser scarification of the pleura and pleurectomy. However tube thoracostomy for drainage and instillation of sclerosmg or chemotherapeutic agents are currently accepted as the optimal mode of therapy, though controversy exists as to which drug produces the best results.
The present study deals with the local management of recurrent malignant pleural effusions, by using intercostal tube drainage either alone or with intrapleural instillation of tetracyclme or doxorubicin. Aming at relieving the distressing symptoms of the patients and also to prevent further fluid reaccumulatiori and improving the quality of life of patients
