Abstract The hematological malignancies are clonal diseases which are thought to derive from a single cell in the bone marrow (BM) or peripheral lymphoid tissue (Sawyers and Witte, 2001) Leukemias are malignant neoplasms of hematopoietic stern cells. They are the leading cause of cancer death in children under 15 years of age and the seventh most common form of cancer death overall. They are primary disorders of bone marrow (Nohl et al.,2005). Free radicals are highly reactive species that have been implicated in the pathogenesis of many disease as leukemias. r f the antioxidant system is mpaired ,the reactive oxygen species can initiate lipid peroxidation and DNA damage leading to mutagenesis, carcinogenesis and cell death.(Devi et 01.,2000). Oxidative stress has been implicated in aging and in the pathogencsis of a number of disorders as leukemias .The extent of injury is generally related to an increase or decrease of one or more free radical scavenging enzymes. In erythrocytes it can result to heamolysis which is one of the pathogenesis of anemia in cancer patients. (Zima et al., 1996). This study aimed to study the significance of Glutathione Reductase as an antioxidant and Malondialdehyde level as an lipid per oxidation in patients with hematological malignancies. The study was carried out at Clinical Pathology Department;” Menoufiya University hospital and samples were collected from the department of oncology, in the period between April -October, 2006 . |
