Abstract

The Internt allows one PC, called a client, to control hardware (like motors and relas) lrsLal!ed on another PC. called a server In other words, devices can be remotely controlled or monitored. Since the Internet is just a medium for computers to talk to each other, it enables user to perform applications like data acquisition and control of specific process. Web based data acquisition makes the process and system data available across the computer networks and the Internet. It constitutes another term for networked data acquisition and control. This latter is a technology that allows user to use computer networks or the Internet to directly access and monitor processes and systems, acquires application data, and maintains control points. An integrated web server is used to host a web page containing the system acquired information. The power of using the Internet to control and sense remote applications allows users to host these applications. With the growing popularity of wireless Internet, devices can be controlled and sensed from mobile platforms like cars. The protocol generally used in office, corporate environments and fctory automation is TCP/IP. Ethernet and TCP/IP are well known and trusted networking technologies. The following items are needed to communicate and provide data on the computer networks and the Internet: - Operator control centre hardware to send and receive data from the server PC. - -Data acquisition and control logic. - Web page containing system acquired information. -Web server to host pages containing acquired data and control points. - Data logging. As a representative example using the technologies developed in this thesis, is the Monitoring and controlling of a conveying system in a crushing plant. It consists of three motors to be monitored and controlled remotely over the plant Ethernet network and the Internet. These technologies comprise three main parts: the designing and implementation of operating control centre (0CC) printed circuit board, the design of a real motor control center (MCC) panel and, finally, developing and implementing Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software for operator interface through an Ethernet network. SCADA software is networked over the Internet to accomplish the communications and the .NET programming technology that is in SCADA software programming.
