Abstract

Bound to the language of newspapers. In other words, such items may not be used in other registers. Hence, every lexical item rendered in a newspaper article bears certain significnace of its own. It is carefully manipulated to fit in the cycle of power represented largely by the media.
The corpus of the study consists of articles puplised in the context of the palestinian intifada in the year 2002. the topic of the articles; the palestinian – Israeli conflict, is of great interest to every Arab. Hence, a research into such topic may provide insights into how the palestinian –Israeli conflict may be regarded by reader of another language.
The main focus of the study is investiagating translation problems on the lexical level. The analysis is primarily interested in investigating single – word lexical items from translational perspective. Hence, it is not within the scope of the study to investigate translation related to multi –word lexical items. It is significant to illustrate that research on lexical items bears certain significance in translation studies. In fact, translation has been described as ” something people do with words.” (Chesterman, 1985; cited in anderman & Rogers, 1996: 4) Hence, words are the basic meaning bearers. Moreover, as expressed by anderman & Rogers (1996), in cases when translation problesm related to the encoding or the decding processes are referred to, translators and translation scholars usually refer to words since they play an essential role in the cohesive construction of a text. Hence, texts may not be traslated withou reference to the meaning of words.
Purpose and scope of the study:
Bearing in mind the imprtance of the relation between language and politics and the influence of political discourse on people, ithe current study attempts to approach political discourse from a translational perspective. The study aims at directing attension to a number of translation problems that might be encountered on the lexical level when translating political newspaper articles.
The study’s main interest is translation problesm in the lexical level ( single –word lexical items.) this is due to the fact that , as illustrated by word- for- word, sence- for- sence and the more recently text- for- text, the fact remains that ’ words occupy a position of unique importance as the building material of the text, the content words forming the bricks’ and the function words the mortar (…), ready for use by the bridge – builder/ translator.” (Anderman & Rogers, 1996: 4)
A further aim of the study is to underline the significance of lexical choices rendered in political articles, lexical choices are carefully selected so as to convey the writher’s attitudes and political view. Being culturally- related, the interpretation of lexical choices rendered in political discourse always needs careful attention and thorough knowledge of the ST political perspective on part of the translator. If the translator fails to grasp the meaning and the value of the .
