Abstract

The group of Minimal Associated Pathological Lesions (MAPLs) of the vocal folds includes benign lesions which are caused by vocal trauma. Many other factors may influence the production of these disorders; one of them is the psychological factor. This study was conducted on two groups of subjects: group I included 50 individual who are free from any voice disorder (control group) and group 11 included 100 patients having MAPLs of the vocal folds.

In order to clarify the psychogenic background of this type of voice disorders, both groups were subjected to voice assessment protocol as well as psychiatric evaluation using the following scales.
1- The Social Readjustment Rating Questionnaire (Holmes and Rahe, 1967).
2- Symptoms Checklist (El-Behary, 1984).
3- Manifest Anxiety Scale of Taylor (1953).
4- Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) scales to assess hysteria (Hy) and hypochondriasis (Hs) (Melaika, 1969).
5- The Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (Zung, 1965).
Results of comparison between both groups revealed highly significant difference as regard depression and anxiety. These results may support the presence of psychogenic background of MAPLs of the vocal folds.

It was important to have a closer look on each subgroup of MAPLs as regard the results of psychiatric evaluation. The following subgroups only showed significant difference from control group with variable degrees (vocal fold nodules, vocal fold polyps and contact granuloma
