Abstract

Birth asphyxia is a general term used to describe inadequate intake of oxygen at birth \vhich result in chemical changes include:-Hypoxemia which means low oxygen in blood. Acidosis which is a condition in which too much acid build in blood.
Birth asphyxia is a common disease and still cases of severe asphyxia are present.
Outcome is related to severity of asphyxia
Risk factors are variable. Factors related to the baby. Factors related to the mother and factors related to bad care.
Factors related to the mother such as maternal heart or respiratory disease, maternal hypertension, Diabetis and bad maternal penatal, natal or post natal care.
However other risk factors are still under investigation and not known uptill now. Such cases need continuous research to discover it. Risk factors differ from one place to another in the same country.
Our aim was to identify the clinical - laboratory factors associated with severe asphyxia in infants admitted to Menufiya NICU with the diagnosis of birth asphyxia.
