Abstract

Over the past 15-20 years, there has been increasing clinical and experimental evidence to suggest that retrograde reflux of gastric contents into the laryngopharynx, so-called laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), may play an important role in the development of laryngeal and voice diseases.
A quite large percentage of patients present to the otolaryngology and vocology practice with complaints consistent with laryngeal irritation, such as throat clearing, voice quality changes and globus sensation. This complex of symptoms is commonly thought to be caused by LPR.
These’facts leave the physician little alternative but to treat patients empirically with expensive drugs over prolonged period of time. Furthermore, many patients do not have confidence in the diagnosis because they have no symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux such as heartburn.
Unfortunately, although it appears to be clear that acid can cause irritation to the larynx, it remains difficult to determine if acid is really the cause of laryngeal irritation in any given patient.
