Abstract

Leukemias are the most common of all childhood cancers with ALL making about 77% of all pediatric age leukemias. All was the first form of disseminated malignancy shown to be curable with chemotherapy and irradiation, and thus has represented the model for cancer diagnosis, prognosis and treatment.
Current treatments for childhood cancers are associated with considerable success. Survival rate for the most common cancer including ALL are now in excess of 80%. Those survivors are considered cured but many are adversely affected by a number of late effects as a consequence of cancer and its treatment. Theses can include physical problems such as cardiac dysfunction, growth problems, obesity and infertility, as well as educational, emotional and behavioral sequelae. In addition there is a risk of cancer recurrence. For these reasons, survivors need to be knowledgeable about the possible consequences of the illness and vigilant about their health. It is very important to encourage survivors to attend follow- up clinics, often on an annual base.
The aim of the follow up study is to provide:-
1) suggested guidelines for- term follow- up for survivors of childhood and adolescent acute lymphoblstic leukemia (ALL) and recommendations for screening and management of late effects that may potentially arise as a result of therapeutic exposures used during treatment of ALL.
