Abstract

Geographically aden is situated at latitude 12-47n and at longitude 44-58e. It is located at the south west tip of yemen and the arab peninsula. Mid-way betwen europe and far east, aden lies on major world trading route through the suez canal. It is one of the largest natural harbors in the world with an area of about 70km of shelteredwater surrounded by jebel shamsan, khoremakser, and the shore which extends to the hills of little aden. The port of aden consists of the lnner harbor, the oil harbor serving aden refinery and the anchorage and approach channels of the outer harbor.
The main objevtive of the study is to environmental assessment of heavy metal pollution in bottom sediments from the gulf of aden, yemen to achieve this objective, twenty one surficial sediment samples were collected from different selected station from port of aden during 2004. the port was divided into five zones as the following: zone i located in western area of the port, represents four stations (station 1 to station 4) zone II located in the north of the port (high polluted area, industrial waste) from station 5 to station 7 zone III (the high polluted area, more human activity) represents nine stations from station 8 to station 16 while zone IV represents three station (station 17 to station 19) in additions two stations 20 and 21 (zone v) located in the eastern area of the port. The sediments were collected using grab sampler plced into sealed polythylene bags.
