Abstract Tobacco smoking, with its devasting effects on health is an example of a man made epidemic despite the widespread knowledge of harmful effects of tobacco use; adolescents continue to adopt smoking habit Aim of the study: The present study was designed to assess the smoking behavior among Alexandria University students using the social learning theory through the following: 1- Assessment of the student’ knowledge about health hazards of smoking 2- Assessment of the pattern of smoking behavior 3- Assessment of the beliefs and attitudes towards public action against smoking and 4- Determination of the social and environmental factors related to smoking behavior Target population and study sample:- To fulfill this aim, a cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 400 students. The students were often available during the academic day in the form of small groups (4-6 student each) to represent different colleges and different educational grades during breaks between lectures The study sample comprises a number of these groups chosen randomly as clusters within the period of 3 months so as to fulfill the sample size of students (200 males and 200 females) of the academic year (2003-2004). |
