Abstract Obesity means excess body fat, and is recognized simply when body mass index (weight index (KG)/height (m2)) is greater than 30Kg/m2. Children obesity is associated with increase in number of fat cells, and is likely to persist during adulthood. The major causes of obesity are genetic, endocrinal, physical inactivity, excess fat and carbohydrate ingestion, as well as psychological troubles. Medical consequences of obesity include diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, coronary heart disease, hypoventilation, osteoarthritis, and cancer. Food habits are largely established during childhood. Children’s eating habits and physical activity patterns have changed over the last decades. Nutrition education is an essential components in prevention and treatment of obesity, and it aims at changing food habits when needed, so that each individual eats the right kinds and amount of foods. The main aim of the present work was: 1- To assess pediatric obesity among primary school children in Alexandria. 2- To study knowledge, attitudes of parents, and behavior of children towards sound nutrition. 3- To plan, implement, and evaluate a Nutrition Educational Program to parents of obese children, aiming at promotion of healthy feeding habits of young children. |
