Abstract Packing the nose is an essential procedure after surgical operations OH the nose .• beside the local effect of nasal packing , there is also a systemic effects in the form of change on arterial blood gases and acid-base balance. The aim of this study is to detect and study the effect of both traditional nasal packs and pneumatic nasal catheters on blood gases and the difference between these effects. The study was conducted on thirty patients, subjected to nasal operations, that were classified into two groups . The first group consisted of fifteen patients, 9 males, and 6 females and their ages ranged between 19 and 42 years .This group treated by traditional nasal packs in the form of gauze imprignated on vaseline as an anterior nasal packs The second group consisted also of fifteen patients, 9 males and 6 females and their ages ranged between 21 and 46. This group | treated by the pneumatic nasal catheters called EPISTAT which is a dual cuff silicon catheter with a central airway ,and two independently inflatable balloons. Blood gases which include p02, pco^ , pH , HB and Hco were assessed before the operations and after twenty four hours The results revealed that with the use of the traditional nasal packs there is change of blood gases in the formofhypoxia, hypercarbia, increased HC03 and HB with insignificant change of PH. but with the use of pneumatic nasal catheters there is no |
