Abstract Diabetes mellitus is one of the most frequently occurring diseases with more or less generalized vascular pathology. Yue, (1989) found that the nasal mucociliary clearance in diabetic patients is decreased with increased pH values of the mucus secretion of the nose. The nasal mucociliary clearance time was studied in this thesis in the normal individuals and patients with diabetes mellitus. Also, the pH values of the nasal secretion was measured by using special indicator paper. Our study included twenty patients with N.I.D.D.M., twenty patients with I.D-D.M. and twenty normal individuals as a control group. The nasal mucociliary clearance time was measured by using saccharine solution placing one DROP over the nasal mucosa of an area 1-1.5 cm behind the anterior end of the inferior turbinate and asking the patient to swallow every half minute and the time was recorded when he felt a sweet taste in his mouth. A small biopsy was taken from an area 1-1.5 cm behind the anterior. |
