Abstract Inguinal hernia is a very cotrrnon surgical condition, and it will remain a good source of surgical treatise. The anatomy of the inguinal region has been discussed, since the inguinal herniorrhaphy, to be performed with meticulous repair, needs accurate understanding of the anatomical built of this region. The natural gaurds against protrusion of the viscera through the inguinal region are mentioned with pointing out to the inguinal shutter mechanism and the nature of the internal ring. The possible etiological factors contributing to the pathogenesis of inguinal hernia have been discussed with special stress on the relation between hernia and cancer and the effect of lung emphysema and smoking on producing hernia, specially the direct type. A comparison between different types of anaesthesia for herniorrhaphy has been done with conclusion that the local anaesthesia must be the ideal method, being the method producing the least complications specially in high risk patients. |
