Abstract The results of this work indicate that volume blood flow in portal bed increases with the development of portal hypertension. Closure of oesophageal varices by injection scierotherapy results in decrease of blood flow in portal vein wi iii increase in l)lood flow in splenic and superior mesenteric veins. This may be due to the development of spontaneous splenoreiial shunt as described above, hut this may he a general rule applicable to other large extrahepatic portal-systemic shunts such as spontaneous gasirorenal shunt, so further study is recommended to assess this point. The results of the present study clearly demonstrate that injection scierotherapy is not the treatment of choice in portal hypertension as it leads to diversion of portal blood toward the splenic bed with (Ii latation and tourliousity of the splenic vein, and also ii may lead to the development of a new portal systemic collateral at the splenic vein and the left renal vein. from the results of this study, we can conclude that the prophylactic sclerotherapy most probably hurl the patient and this trend shoud be reassessed. |
