Abstract This study has been performed experimentally on rabbits to compare single — layer colonic anastomosis technique with the double—layer technique. Twinty rabbits were used for this work and they were divided into two groups, each containing 10 rabbits. In the first group, single—layer colonic anastomosis has been performed using Vicryl 5/0 interrupted sutures through the bowel wall including the mucosa. In the second group, double layer colonic anastomosis has been performed using an inner row of continuous 5/0 Vicryl through and through sutures including all layers of the colonic wall, covered by an outer layer of interrupted 5/0 Vicryl sutures in the seromuscular layer. Four weeks postoperatively, the rabbits were sacrificed in both groups to assess the integrity of the anastomotic site clinically, radiologically, and histologically. The results of this study has shown that the mean operative time required to complete the single-layer anastomosis was 5 minutes less than that required for the double-layer anastomosis which is an advantage for the single-layer technique. |
