Abstract

Cancer antigen (CA 125) is one of the tumor associated antigens. CA 125 is a glycoprotein detected by the monocional antibody OC 125, which is prepared by somatic cell hybridization of spleen cells from mice immunized with an epithelial cell line derived from an ovarian cystadenocar— cinoma. CA 125 is a high molecular weight glycoprotein expressed in celomic epithelium and amnion during embryonic development and its molecular weight is greater than 200.000 Dalton. Serum level of 35 U/mi was considered to be a reference value for CA 125.
There were several reports that support the decidua as the major source CA 125 in maternal serum. Thus high tissue levels of CA 125 were found in first trimester decidual homogenates and extract from term decidua. a sharp elevation in CA 125 level 35 li/mi was observed by the tenth week of pregnancy, after the twelfth week, the CA 125 levels returned to those of normal non pregnant women 35 U/ml and remained 35 U/mi until delivery or abortion, these levels did significantly increase soon after delivery or abortion.
