Abstract The need for an agent to ripen the cervix before dilatation in cases of missed abortion and in nulliparous women where the cervical tissues are firm and fibrous and do not dilate easily is increased nowadays to lessen the man-made complications as cervical laceration, cervical rupture or other derangement of cervical function. Prostaglandins have been shown to be more effective than placebo in promoting cervical ripening. Their use has opened a new avenue in this field. However there are some problems with their use such as price, availability and maternal side effects. Cytotec® is a cheap and stable prostaglandin El analogue which has currently been used in the treatment of duodenal ulcers. This drug has been recently introduced as a cervical ripening agent with promising results by either vaginal or oral route. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of misoprostol as a cervical ripening agent on the pregnant uterine cervix in cases of missed abortion and on the non-pregnant uterine cervix in cases of primary infertility. |
