Abstract
The healing of fractures, its mechanism and the factors affecting it, are essential knowledge for the orthopaedic surgeon to treat fractures properly.In this essay we first reviewed certain basic aspects of bone related to fracture healing. In chapter one, we reviewed the histology of bone, its types and structure. We a’lso discussed the different types of bone cells and their structure in relation to their function.In chapter two, we dealt with the biochemical components of bone, either organic or inorganic.In chapter three we discussed the blood supply of bones, its sources and the effect of fractures on it.The bioelectrical properties of bone were discussed in chapter four, showing the types of electrical potentials of bones i.e. the standing and stress-generated potentials, their source and characteristics.In chapter five, we looked at the different phases of healing of fractures, the sequence of events occurring in them and the role played by bone cells in the process. We will also discussed the different stimuli controlling the stages of repair
