Abstract In this study, a review of the literature concerning the embryology, anatomy, biomechanics and the different lesions in relation to the ligamentum pate— use has been studied. The ligamentum patellae starts to appear by eight weeks of intrauterine life, while the patellar retina— cula start to appear by the age of ten weeks. The four heads of the quadriceps Lemons muscle converge into a common tendon which is inserted into the upper pole of the patella. The insertion is carried down to the tibial tuberosity by means of the ligamentum patellae which extends from the lower pole of the patella down to the tibial tuberosity. The patella can be considered as a sesemoid bone in the quadriceps tendon. In addition, the superficial fibres of the quadriceps tendon pass down in front of the patella to join the ligamentum patellee, while the m,diaj. and lateral patellar retinacula pass from the sides of the quadriceps tendon to be inserted into the petella and along the oblique ridges of the upper end of the tibia. |
