Abstract

Congenital heart diseases are significant causes of morbidity,mortality and years of potential life lost especially affecting the young children. C.H.D. occurs in approximately 8 of 1000 live births. The incidence is still higher among stillboms, abortuses and premature infants.
The etiology of most cases of C.H.D. is still unknown. Genetic factors are appreciated to play some role. Approximately 3°/o of patients with C.H.D. have an identifable single gene defect while 5-8% have an associated chromosomal abnormality. 2 - 4 % of cases are associated with environmental or adverse maternal conditions ( as maternal diabetes, systemic lupus, congenital rubella syndrome, drugs and exposure to teratogens or irradiation specially in 1st trimester of pregnancy).
Knowledge of the prevalent types of congenital heart anomalies may help in planning programs of prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of those children suffering of C.H.D.
The aim of this work was to find out the frequencies of different types of C.H.D. in the studied cases, to assess the distribution of risk factors and underling etiological causes that may cause C.H.D. and evaluate the clinical presentations and different methods of diagnosis of these patients.
These work carried out on 188 patients with C.H.D. divided into two groups;
- Group (I) : 148 patients with isolated cardiac lesions.
- Group (II) :.40 patients with complex cardiac lesions.
