Abstract

Environmental pollution is an increasingly pressing and alarming problem nowadays. Heavy traffic, urbanisation and industrialization are all stigmata of the modern civilisation. Such additions to our environment cause many effects including excessive lead pollution in the atmosphere we live in. A study on the blood lead level was a necessity to discover the impact of such pollution. Hundred pairs of Egyptian mothers and their full—term newborn infants were the population of this study. The blood lead level in maternal venous blood was compared to that in cord blood using the atomic absorption spectrophotometer method. The mean blood lead level in mothers was found to be 24.8 iig/d9 ± 7.47 S.D. The mean cord blood lead was found to he 11.43 ig/d ± 4.88 S.D. Sixty—eight percent of maternal levels lied between 15 and 29 ig/d, while eight—five percent of cord levels were between 4 and 16 pg/dc. A strong correlation was found
between maternal and cord blood lead concentrations with r = 0.4448 and t = 4.966. This was also proved in studies by Zetterlund44 and Zarembski43 on paired maternal
and cord blood lead samples.
