Abstract

Thalassaemia ’is one of the most common causes ofanaenlia in the world and in our country. It is a blood disease requiring frequent blood transfusion that cause iron overload hence, the use of iron chelators as desferrioxamine.
Tvv-enty two children were involved in this work with beta-thalassacmia including 18 patients of thalassacmia major and 4 of thalassaemia intermedia attending the.pediatric Haematology Clinic, Minufiya University Hospital.
They were 1 1 males arid 11 females with mean age of 9.66 (± 4.26) years and mean Hh concentration of 6.53 (^ 1.19) gm/dl.
Twenty normni healthy children were enrolled as controls. They were 10 males and 10 females with mean age of 9.5 (± 4.5) years arid mean Hb conccninilion of 12.5 {± 1) gm/dl.
l-’iill history was taken from the patients lying stress on the age at which blood transfusion was started, frequency of blood transfusion, iron chclation therapy, type, duration and compliance and history of any audiological problem.
Thorough clinical examination was done lying stress on weight, height,si/c of the liver, spleen, scar ofspiL’ncctomy and h.N.T examination.
Full hislory and thorough clinical was done to the controls to exclude any disease.
Laboratory investigations were done for all patients as well as controls in the form of CRC, lib electrophorcsis, estimation of serum iron, iron binding capacity. scrum tcrritii-i level and serum level of copper and zinc.
The resuils r.cvcaiecl that, there verc significant decrease In the Mb concentration, significant increase in leucocyfic count an’l platelets count in thaiassaemiL: children than in the control group.
