Abstract
Epilepsy is a common problem in children and it is more prevalent in developing than in developed countries.The incidence rate is greatest in early childhood .The etiology of epilepsy is often multifactorial.
About 70% of epilepsy have no clear cause. Inhibitory system are very important in function of CNS and failure of such system particularly those using GABA have been postulated to underlying many forms of epilepsy.
Dopamine also appears to function as inhibitory neurotransmitter.
The study included 25 epileptic children and 15 healthy normal children who presented to , El Menoufyia University Hospital and El Hosein University Hospital” . They are males and Females. Their ages ranged from 3 to 14 years old mean 8.6 and they are divided into two groups:
Group ( A) include 25 epileptic children who take anti epileptic treatment (18 males and 7 Females ) . Group ( B ) include 15 healthy normal children as a control group (6 males and 9 Females).
All cases were subjected to the Following :
1)A detailed history taking from the mothers with special emphasis on:
a) Family history of similar condition .b) History of consanguinity.
c) Pattern of epilepsy d) Type of medication intake.
e) Duration medication intake.
H)Neurological examination including I.Q. determination by Wechsler
Intelligence scale for Children ( W I S C).
III)E. E. G. examination.
IV)Laboratory investigations which include :
^Estimation of serum GABA and Dopamine by thin chromatographic method (Dent J947 ; Saad ,1979 ; Weiss and Rossi J962 2)Estimation of Serum manganese by atomic absorption. (Chusid ,1987).
