Abstract The present work was designed to study in a comparative the effect of oral administration of different calcium- channel blockers namely, verapamil, nifedipine and diltiazem versus propranolol on controlling the degree of hypertension secondary to liver cirrhosis of variable aetiologies. This study was conducted on fifty patients with variable grades of chronic liver disease, portal hypertension endoscopically demonstrated oesophageal varices. patients were subjected to the following before treatment: Full history taking and clinical examination. Routine investigations including: • Complete urine and stool examination. • Sigmoidoscopy with rectal biopsies examined microscopically. • Complete blood picture. • Liver function tests. • Viral markers. Abdominal ultrasonography. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Percutaneous needle-liver biopsy whenever possible. |
