Abstract

Portal hypertension is one of’ the common if not the commonest problem in Egypt. Recently there has been an increasing tendency to rely upon abdominal ultrasonography in the evaluation of portal hyper F4P$ nn i.nvive procedure, reliable cheap and reproducible. This thesis aimed to evaluate the size of the pancreas and pertal blood flow in patients with portal hypertension using abdominal ultrasonography and Doppler techniques.
This study included fifty patients with portal hypertension among the patients who were admitted into Cairo University hospitals during the period from February 1986 to November 1987 as well as ten normal persons as a control group. Patients with portal hypertension were subjected to a thorough clinical evaluation, liver functions tests, upper G.I.T. endoscopy as well as splenoportography. Portal blood pressure was measured intra — operative’y in patients who were operated Upon.
It was found that there is a corelation between the size of the pancreas and portal blood pressure where the higher the pressure, the bigger the size of the pancreas, yet the pancreatic enlargement was not homogenous as the increase in size was more in the head than the body of the pancreas.
Definite changes in the portal blood flow were detected by Doppler techniques where the flow was non pulsatile with diminution of the velocity
