Abstract

The frequency and etiology of aortic and mitral valve disease was studied in 100 patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Evaluation included echocardo — graphy and serum assays.
Mitral annulus calcification (MAC) was detect ed in 8 of 25 (32%) patients with end stage predialysis CRF; in 19 of 50 (38%) patients on hernodialysis; and in 7 of 25(28%) renal transplant patients.
Aortic valve calcification (AVC) was found in 6 of 25 (24%) patients in the predialysis group, in 16 of 50(32%) dialysis patients and in 3 of 25 (12%) renal transplant patients.
Mitral regurgitation was present in 5 patients (20%) in tlzepredialysis group, in 16 dialysis patients (32%) and in three patients (‘21%,) in the renal transplantation group.
Aortic regurgitation was present in 2 patients (8%) in the predialysis group and in seven patients (14%) in the hemodialysis group.
