Abstract

This work was conducted in UTAH University Hospital iorked on by the orthopaeclic and Plastic Surgery departments.
39 consecutive patients undergoing flap reconstruction of heir extremities, all of them were a result of trauma, were studied, for success or failure for a short term follow up.
The group of patients had varieties of defects ranging open fractures, wounds without fractures, infected lon-union, chronic osteomyelitis, infected prosthesis, and ostoperative wound dehiscence. The ages ranged from 5 to 75 Lrs. Various types of flaps, local, free and distant pedicled aps. The 39 patients had 50 flaps for 41 defects.
The free flaps being mere frequently applied (31/50), in ontrast to (18/50) local flaps and only one distant pedicled The flaps were applied at different periods from the inal injury that caused the defect ranging from 36 hours to years.
The failure rate in this series is high (28%), local flap .ailure rate was 27.8% and the free flap failure rate was 25.8% I the only distant-pedicled flap have failed.
