Abstract In the present study the results of treatment of 514 cases of commiriuted fractures of the distal radius using the self contained skeletal traction technique were presenLcd. The aim was to elucidate the value of using this technique as a method of treatment in such injuries. Our material included 53 patients with 514 comminu— ted fractures of the distal radius, all studied prospectively. The classification given by Dowling and Sawyer (1961) was used in this study. Females to males ratio was 1.6 : 1. The youngest patient included was 20 years old while the eldest was 79 years old. Fourty four per cent of the cases were below the age of fourty, 19% above the age of sixty, arid 37% between fourty and sixty years old. Extra-articular coimninution was seen in 65% of the cases, while in 35% of them the articular surface was involved. Plain x—ray was the investigation used in diagrio— sis. Postero—anterior and lateral views were the routine radiological projections, however, oblique views were made when needed to clarify the comminiution |
