Abstract Carcinoma of the breast is a major public health problem. It is one of the leading causes of cancer death among women all over the world, with about one million new breast cancer cases diagnosed per year (Zhao et al, 2004). This study was conducted on 75 subjects of whom 25 were normal healthy female controls and 50 were patients undergoing surgery for breast cancer (preoperative). The age range of the breast cancer and control groups was the same (50-65 years), although it is found that age has no effect on serum VEGF and serum IL-6 levels i.e. it dose not influence their expression. This study was performed in order to evaluate the diagnostic significance of serum VEGF and serum IL-6 levels in breast cancer in comparison to serum CA15-3 levels and histopathological study. All patients were examined clinically after taking their clinical past history then the following investigations were done for each patient:- Serum levels of VEGF. Serum levels of IL-6. Serum levels of CA15-3. The results were tabulated and statistically analysed, we found that: The serum levels of VEGF, IL-6 and CA15-3 in breast cancer group are significantly elevated compared with those of the controls. Serum IL-6 and serum CA15-3 levels are significantly elevated in metastatic group compared to the non L.N. metastasis group, while serum VEGF shows a non significant difference. |
