Abstract

Obstructive uropathy is one of the main causes of end stage renal failure in children that is amenable to therapy. So, early diagnosis and appropriate management can mean the difference between continuous dependence on dialysis or renal transplantation and the freedom to continue a normal style of living. If obstruction is not diagnosed early, there wilt be inevitable progression of renal functional deterioration and the advent of uremic syndrome. The causes of pediatric urinary tract obstruction are numerous and include: congenital, calcular, traumatic, neoplastic and functional disorders. The precise management of children with obstructive uropathy with renal insufficiency depends on cooperative work between the nephrologist. and the urologist.
This work was conducted on 50 children with renal insufficiency secondary to a surgically correctable cause. They were admitted to the Pediatric Hospital, Cairo University. The selection of cases was based on the presence of blood urea nitrogen of more than 21 mg and serum creatinine of more than 1.2 mg.
The blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine, although not so accurate in evaluating the renal function, can be considered as a simple and ideal guide for assessing and following up children with impaired renal function.
The cases consisted of 42 males (84) and 8 females (16%) with a conclusion that males are more liable for obstructive
