Abstract Osteoporosis is considered a formidable challenge to recent medicine, thus clarification of the most effective variables to bone mineralization and at risk groups for developing osteoporosis will help greatly in developing preventive strategies. The present study was designed to investigate the different risk factors of osteoporosis among women above 40 to 65 years old. The study was conducted in women’s health center of Nasser Institute Hospital in Cairo. from the computerized data base of the center, the records ol 1250 women attendants with low BMD (cases) and another I 250 women with normal RMD (controls) were selected by a systematic random way under certain exclusion criteria in the period between April 1997 until April 2000. These records were reviewed and analyzed for the risk factors of osteoporosis. The studied cases were classified according to BMD and WHO classification into osteopenic, osteoporotic and marked osteoporotic with fracture risk. The present study showed that 42.4% of the studied cases were osteopenic, nearly the same percentage (42.7%) were osteoporotic and 14.9% were marked osteoporotic cases with fracture risk.
