Abstract

There is increasing evidence that host defense mechanisms depend on several factors-cellular and humoral-that collaborate together to combat infection. The most important factor that serves as the corner stone in these defense mechanisms, is the polymorphonuclear leucocytes which have tne ability to ingest, km and digest the invading cacteria.
Antimicrobial agents are widely used new and nave a significant bactericidal effect in vitro but the effect in vivo may be disappoint!ngT this is specially true in immune— cornpromi sed patients. Since most antibiotics primarily inhibit cell wall synthesis or protein metabolism of bacteria, it may secondarily alter structure and function of human host cell. Because the neutrophi] is the most important cell in the defense against bacteria, there has been interest in the study of interaction between antibiotics, neutrophils and bacteria.
tests are commonly used for evaluating different pol/morphonuclear functions e-9 tests for assessment of chemotaxis, opsoniration, adhesion, ingest ion, degranulation and bactericidal activity.
