Abstract

this study attempts alinguistic analysis of the relationship between language and power in egyptian arabic discourse the term being used in the context of the spoken language power the ability of people and institutions to influence and control the beavions of others is manifasted in various types of discours political, legal, medical and educational the present study will be concerned mainly with medical discourse which has not been investigated in arabic befor hence doctor patient encounters in both private practice settings and public clinics will be investigated in terma of the aspects in which the relative power of interactants is reflected I.E directives especially questionsand commands politaness strategies for face threatening acts FTAS turn taking violations over lap interuption and back channel conversational implicatures adjacency pairs and the preference system .
