Abstract

Heavy metal pollution is an existing and growing worldwide problem. During the past few decades there are immediate concerns with current commercial ligands that are used for heavy metal chelation. Although there are many technologies for heavy metal remediation, the use of chemical chelation has only recently come under systematic investigation and it may be the best method for providing a final solution to heavy metal pollution.
In this thesis new twelve anionic-nonionic surfactants were synthesized by the reaction of ethylene diaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) with (citric acid or trimercoptotriazine ), the ester products react with polyethylene glycol with different molecular weights and number of moles to obtain the final product.
The first series of chelating agent surfactants called sequestering agent this is due to form soluble complexes with metal ion, however another series form insoluble complexes and precipitating with metal ion. The structures of the prepared compounds were confirmed on the bases of analytical and spectral data.
The prepared surfactants show good surface active properties, including surface tension (y), effectiveness (cmc), efficiency (PC20) and emulsifying power. Critical micelle concentration (CMC), maximum surface excess (max) and minimum surface area (Amin) have been studied. Free energy of micellization (AGomic) and adsorption (AG°ads) have been calculated.
Lower hydrophilicty of the product resulting from increasing the ethylene oxide content and decreasing anionic.
