Abstract

Cadmium and chromium are widely used industrial chemicals. The effects of both cations on hematological, biochemical, lipid peroxidation and DNA damage of cells upon exposure to 1/20 LD50 of CdCl2 and K2Cr2O7 for 30 and 60 days and 1/10 LD50 of each for 14 days has been studied in adult male rats. The results showed that both cations induce a significant decrease in RBCs, Hb, PCV, total protein, and albumin, and a significant increase in ALP, ALT and AST activities and increase in the concentration of serum creatinine and urea. Also, a significantly decrease in antioxidant enzymes (SOD and GST) and a significant increase in MDA in liver and kidney tissues. Cadmium and chromium induced a significant DNA damage as indicated by increased DNA protein cross-links and DNA fragmentation. These data may contribute to the toxicity, and carcinogenicity of cadmium and chromium.
