Abstract

The study presented in this thesis is directed towards the direction of arrival estimation (DOA) problem with antenna arrays. This problem is very important in advanced communication systems as mobile and satellite communications to increase the system capacity. The different methods which are used in direction of arrival estimation between them are investigated in this thesis.
The neural networks are used to handle the computational problem of the DOA estimation. One of the main advantages of neural networks is that it can be implemented in analog circuits with time constants in the order of nanoseconds and consequently they have fast convergence rates. It gas been shown that the neural networks have capability to track sources in real time.
Also the neural network is used in some applications in antennas, where radial basis function neural network (RBF-NN) is used for designing of hemispherical dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) with a concentric conductor, and it is used for filling the method of moments (MoM) impedance matrix.
