An Investigation into the Influence of Paperboard Temperature on Ink Transfer and Print Quality By Hanan Ahmed Abd El-Kader Mohamed Chemistry Department, Faculty of Science, Helwan University
The effect of thermal treatment of paperboard (between 25 and 200°C) at various time intervals on its physical, optical, and mechanical properties was studied.
The print quality in terms of print density and print gloss and the morphological structure of the thermally treated paperboard were also investigated.
The results showed that, the physical properties of paperboard as roughness and porosity slightly increased by heating.
Although brightness and whiteness decreased, yellowness increased on increasing temperature and heating time. Gloss increased as the temperature increased up to 130°C, then it started to decrease. Opacity was not affected by heating.
Mechanical properties were differently influenced up on heating. Tensile strength and folding endurance of paperboard were improved with increasing the temperature up to 150°C at all time of heating, then they decreased.
Stiffness was not affected by the thermal treatment but tear strength decreased after heating beyond 100°C. Burst started to decrease after heating to 130°C.
Increasing temperature up to 150°C and 5 minutes led to a maximum increase in print density. Print gloss reached its maximum value at 150°C and one minute, then both of them showed a substantial decrease in their values as heating time and temperature increased.
The surface structure of the thermally treated paperboard was evaluated using scanning electron microscope. The obtained micrographs verified the physical, optical, and mechanical properties results and also confirmed the print density and print gloss results.
