Abstract

The Aim of the Research:
• The aim of this research is to study the wooden statues in the old kingdom in order to represent the importance of these statues during that period as well as to show how they made their different kinds and the reason of making them out of wood.
• It must be indicated that this research will study only the statues, which are placed in the Egyptian museum.
• This research contains four chapters as follows.
1- Statues During the Old Kingdom
• This chapter talks about the origin of manufacturing statues as well as the aim, the purposes of their manufacturing and finally the places in which the statues were placed during the Old Kingdom.
• The ancient Egyptian believed that he would be resurrected after his death and then the soul will reoccupy him once more, so he had to mummify his body in order to achieve this purpose.
• The ancient Egyptians were afraid that their bodies would be decomposed which by its turn the soul would be decomposed too, so they thought of making statues to allow the soul to occupy them if the bodies under any circumstances decomposed.
• The Egyptian statue was often made to be seen from the front so they didn’t care about sculpting the details of the back parts because it was made only to enable the soul to recognize the statue when entering the tomb. Since the statue was made to enable the soul to occupy it forever, therefore the ancient Egyptian statue oftenly represented the deceased in his most powerful appearance in order to be resurrected in the same form.
2- The Artistic School during the Old Kingdom
• This chapter talks about wood, as a native material used in making statues in Ancient Egypt .It is known that there were two kinds of timbers, the Egyptian timbers and the foreign timbers.
• Concerning the Egyptian timbers, we can recognize a little number of them because they were drawning in a very specific and simple way on the walls of tombs and temples.
• It is mentioned in the ancient Egyptian texts that wood from the sycamore tree was used in making the wooden statues in Ancient Egypt, because it seems that this kind of wood was very useful and the sycamore tree is still growing in Egypt up-till now.
• About the foreign timbers it can be said that Egypt was not rich in timber during its historical period and it is still poor in timber, which grows in a very normal way. So it was necessary from the most ancient period to import timber from the foreign countries.
• The most important foreign wood, which was used in making statues, was the wood, which is taken from the Ebony tree. It is mentioned in the ancient Egyptian texts that Ebony was imported from the countries, which are situated to the south of Egypt, and it was used in making small statues.
• Also this chapter will discuss the art of wood, carving the tools which were used in this art containing the artist himself as well as the process of making the wooden statues in addition to the difference between making the wooden statues and making the statues of other materials.
• Throughout this chapter, it will be tried to explain the reason of making statues of wood although different kinds of stone were available in Egypt in a very large scale.
3- Classification of the Wooden Statues in the Old Kingdom
• This chapter will include the classification of the wooden statues such as men, women, children, servants and captives. Also it will represent; the main characteristic features of the wooden statues which date back to the old kingdom, as the wooden statues of the old kingdom were characterized by lightness and simplicity The most important example which is still in a good state of preservation up till now is the statue of Sheikh-El-Balad
4- The Method of Making This Research Useful for Tourist Guidance.
• After studying this research, the researcher will represent the scientific method or the academic way of describing the wooden statues for the tourists without borrowing.
