Abstract
Fouling organisms are constant source of annoyanc; and expense, phis led many nations to spend millions of pounds i n order t o investigate t h i s problem and overcorn it, Detailed studies of fovling problem have been scanty fr3.n the Egyptian coasts, except f o r some observations given by Banoub (3;960),, Megally (1970) and Ghobashy (a & b i n prers). It was intended i n t h i s study that the biological sidn 0” th-e subject shouLd be taken i n consideration in order t2 gain more knowledge on the composition and natixe ” ’ ing. This will definitely, throw bright l i g h t on t h i s problem and consequently may help greatly those working on the engineering and chemical sf de of the problem. . The presented work may stand as n up t o date attempt on the very interesting international fouling problem in our native Egyptian harbours. Polychaetes, being one of %!:Q most important and prevailing fouling representatives, constitute a virgin subect which needs extensive studies, The presented review is an attempt to deal with the polychaetes participating in fouling community from a l l sides. In addition, detailed histological and histochemical investigateon of two predominant polychaete species namela ~ dasychone lucullana fsedentaria) and Typosgllis -v.=.a rl-t- -. (errantia) were studied in an attempt to fill the ga? of the absence of such Informa-tioss in recent reviews. This viork was carried out along a successive perioZ of 24 months, from December (197’7) till t November (1979). Fouling was periodically collected each month from the Eastern h&bour of Alexandria. For comparison f oding was only collected from Suez Canal and pamietta harbou2 in winter and summer seasons.
