Abstract
the genus Amaranthus i s c o n s i d e r e d one of t h e o l d e s t p l a n t s commonly d i s t r i b u t e d i n t r o p i c a l and temperate r e g i o n s . The genus i s a l s o a d a p t e d t o a wide r a n g e of e n v i r o n m e n t a l and e d a p h i c f a c t o r s . T h e r e f o r e , i t shows t h e phenomenon of p h e n o t y p i c p l a s t i c i t y which c a u s e s some c o n f u s i o n s a s t o i t s i d e n t i f i c a t i o n and c l a s s i f i c a t i o n . In t h e p r e s e n t s t u d y , some E g y p t i a n a c c e s s i o n s of t h e g e n u s Amaranthus have been i n v e s t i g a t e d i n o r d e r t o e l u c i d a t e b o t h i n t r a and i n t e r s p e c i f i c r e l a t i o n s h i p among them, i n t e r m s of t h e i r m o r p h o l o g i c a l , c y t o l o g i c a l and e l e c t r o p h o r e t i c c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s . The c o l l e c t e d a c c e s s i o n s were of v i r i d i s , -A . s y l v e s t r i s , A-. graecizan s. ,A h y p o c h o n d r i a c h u s , A-. c r u e n t u s and -A . c h l o r o s t a c h y s s p e c i e s . Tt h a s been found t h a t e a c h of t h e s t u d i e d s p e c i e s c a n b e d i s t i n g u i s h e d from t h e o t h e r s by some m o r p h o l o g i c a l f e a t u r e s , see t h e ”RESULTS” s e c t i o n . The c y t o l o g i c a l i n v e t i g a t i o n s c o n f i r m t h a t t h e genus Amaranthus is diba,sic w i t h x=lh o r x-7 and 2n=32 o r 211-34. -A . v i r i d i s , -A . g r a e c i z a n s and -A . c r u e n t u s h a v e b a s i c chromosome numb’er x=17 and d i p l o i d number 2n=34, w h e r e a s -A . h y p o c h o n d r i a c u s , -A . s y l v e s t r i s , -A . c h l o r o s t a c h y s h a v e x-16 and 211032.
