Abstract The present study aims at analysing the vegetation of the net of canals and drains in the Middle Delta region. This was achieved by determining the vegetation structure in terms of zonal variation in florestic composition, abundance and phenological behaviour of species, identifying the plant communities that characterize the canal-drain ecosystem and focusing the attention towards the environmental variables that affect this type of vegetation. One hundred sites were selected along the banks of a representative numb’er of canals and drains (28 canals and 10 drains) in the study area. Each site was classified into four zones : terrassement, slope, littoral and open water. In each zone (releve), a list of species and their phenological stages were recorded seasonaly (winter 1986 - autumn 19861, and a soil satnple was collected, while in case of the open water zone, a composite water sample was collected. The species cover (m/100 rn) was estimated in each relevk using the lineintercept method during spring season only. |
