Abstract

It is a well known fact that vitamins are useful tonics. Most of the people even some physicians beleive that excessive doses of vitamins are more useful and effective. Many people use vitamins in large doses without prescriptions of physicians. Therefore, the aim of this work was to evaluate the belief present among people that large doses of vitamin D are more useful with no side effects. This was carried out by injection of therapeutic and toxic doses of vitamin D into albino rats. Thirty adult male albino rats were chosen for this work. The animals were classified into 3 groups. The first group included 10 rats , 5 of them recieved no injection, the other 5 rats were injected with distilled water. The animlas were used for the ultrastructural study of some components of the normal renal cortex and these animals were considered as a control. The second group included 5 rats which were subjected to three therapeutic doses 10,800 IU of vitamin D with two weeks interval. Specimens were obtained for ultrastructural study two weeks after the last injection. The third group included the remaining 15 rats and were subdivided into three subgroups each subgroup contained 5 rats.
